RECIPROCITY SOLUTION FOR OPERATOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
“The unfortunate aspect lies in the fact that the programs are as diverse as they are numerous. This seriously impairs the value of certification…. The survey demonstrates a critical need for a nationwide standard of personnel qualification.

Operator certification programs have long experienced difficulties in creating reciprocal recognition of certification. With this concern and related objectives in mind, more than 50 operator certification programs came together in 1972 with the Water Environment Federation and the American Water Works Association to form the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) to be a resource for all certification programs.
Today, the Professional Operator (PO) certification program administered by ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP) presents opportunities for operator certification authorities to improve reciprocity application processing. Benefits include the confidence gained from utilizing a transparent certification process designed to conform to international standards for certification, cost savings and efficiency increases for operator certification programs, and generally, an increase in the value of certification, thereby improving the perception of operator certification programs and the operators they certify.
